One Piece Film: God Valley — The First Canon Movie, Explained

One Piece Film: God Valley is a new theatrical movie set for summer 2027, and it is being billed as the first canon film in the franchise's history. It was announced at One Piece Day 2026 on August 23, alongside a second film, One Piece Film: Baad, due in 2029. Here is what was confirmed, what the God Valley Incident actually is, and why this one matters more than any One Piece movie before it.

What was announced at One Piece Day 2026

Toei Animation revealed two theatrical projects. One Piece Film: God Valley arrives in summer 2027, timed to the manga's 30th anniversary on July 22, 2027. One Piece Film: Baad follows in 2029, aimed at the TV anime's 30th anniversary on October 20, 2029.

The detail collectors keep repeating: for the first time, a One Piece movie is canon. ScreenRant reports the film "will be adapting the God Valley flashback from One Piece's Elbaf Arc," ending a run of nearly three decades of non-canon side-story films. Series creator Eiichiro Oda drew the title-logo art for Baad himself.

What is the God Valley Incident?

The God Valley Incident is a battle that took place 38 years before the current story, on God Valley, an island in the West Blue that has since sunk beneath the sea. It pitted the Rocks Pirates, led by Rocks D. Xebec, against an unlikely alliance of the Roger Pirates and Marine hero Monkey D. Garp.

It is one of the biggest mysteries in One Piece, and the manga only fully depicted it in a recent flashback. The World Government buried the event: the operation was disguised as a training exercise under the Holy Knight Figarland Garling, whose family line later connects to Shanks. The film adapting it directly is a genuine lore milestone.

Who fought at God Valley

The roster is the real collector hook, because the Rocks Pirates were a who's-who of future Emperors. The God Valley flashback confirmed a young lineup that includes:

  • Edward Newgate (Whitebeard)
  • Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom)
  • Kaido
  • Shiki the Golden Lion
  • Gloriosa, Captain John, Miss Buckingham Stussy, and Wang Zhi

On the other side stood Gol D. Roger and Garp — rivals who teamed up only once. Seeing all of them on screen in their prime is the draw.

Why "first canon" changes things

Every earlier One Piece film sat outside the main story, so nothing in them counted. A canon film means the events feed the manga's actual timeline, which raises the stakes for viewers and the merchandise potential for collectors. Expect figure lines to lean into the God Valley cast as 2027 approaches.

No God Valley movie merchandise has been announced yet, so treat any "God Valley figure" listings before an official reveal with caution. The safe move now is to build around the characters the film will feature.

What collectors can do now

If you want to get ahead of the hype, the figures worth watching are the ones tied to the God Valley cast — Roger, Garp, and the future Emperors — plus current Straw Hat pieces from the ongoing Elbaf arc.
