Gundam MGEX Mighty Strike Freedom Revealed: The First New MGEX Kit in 4 Years

Bandai has revealed the MGEX 1/100 Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam, unveiled on August 25, 2026 during its "Latest! Gunpla Info Bureau" broadcast. It is only the third mobile suit to join the Master Grade Extreme (MGEX) line, and the first all-new MGEX kit in four years — making it one of the most anticipated Gunpla announcements of the year for Gundam collectors.

What Bandai revealed on August 25

The reveal followed days of teasing: a cryptic promo image showing a purple background with flashes of yellow, and the MGEX logo front and center. The mystery mobile suit turned out to be the Mighty Strike Freedom Gundam from the 2024 theatrical film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM. Bandai lists the kit for a March 2027 release at a reference price of 26,400 yen (tax included), positioning it firmly as a flagship, display-first Gunpla rather than a casual weekend build.

The kit builds on the frame engineering of the earlier MGEX Strike Freedom, but adds the "Proud Defender" support unit piloted by Lacus Clyne, transforming the suit into its fully armed configuration. Featured gimmicks include the Convergent Heavy Nucleon Beam Cannon "Disruptor," the Futsunomitama physical sword, and interchangeable deployment parts, plus character figures of Kira Yamato and Lacus Clyne.

Why MGEX is a rare event

Master Grade Extreme is Bandai's most elaborate 1/100 Gunpla line, introduced in 2020 for the Gundam franchise's 40th anniversary. Unlike standard Master Grade kits, every MGEX release is built around a single "Extreme Point" — a signature technical showcase — rather than a fixed feature set. Because each one is a major engineering project, releases are years apart.

Until now, only two MGEX kits existed: the MGEX Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka (2020), famous for an internal LED system that lights its Psycho-Frame red and green, and the MGEX Strike Freedom Gundam (2022), which showcased a visible gold internal frame through multiple plating and metallic-molding techniques. Mighty Strike Freedom is the first new entry to that short list since 2022, which is a large part of why the reveal drew so much attention.

"Iridescent Expression": the tech inside

The new kit's Extreme Point is described as "Iridescent Expression." According to Bandai, it is the first Gunpla in history to use colored plastic mechanical core plating, combined with multiple types of gold plating and real metallic-gloss injection molding to create shifting tones and gradations across the armor. In plain terms, the goal is a finished model that shimmers and changes color under light straight out of the box — no paint required. For collectors who value display presence over parts count, that is the headline feature.

What it means for collectors

SEED FREEDOM reignited demand for Strike Freedom-lineage designs, and a high-end MGEX version of the film's hero suit is likely to be a centerpiece piece for many shelves. Flagship Gunpla like this tend to see strong pre-order interest and can be hard to find at retail after launch, so fans who want one usually track it early. Beyond the kit itself, a marquee Gundam release like this typically drives a wider wave of interest in Gundam figures, prize items, and collectibles across the franchise.
